This year (2012) the lawn mowers were not working so the grass
grew high. A deer cub found this sunny spot in the high grass a perfect resting
place and the sight was such a delight as we watched the cub from our kitchen
window.
We had a green woodpecker couple nesting in the birch tree outside
our kitchen window. What a spectacle! The noise the two chicks made was quite
something. With a video camera I managed to catch one of the chicks leaving
the nest. It took less than a second and the young bird was gone. This was in
2008
In 2009, ordinary woodpeckers made a new hole in the tree, about one meter above the old one where the green woodpeckers lived. During a few busy weeks in May-June they got their young ones ready and then left.
In 2010 the woodpeckers came back (se picture above) but in
the old hole downstairs a squirrel had his home. This wasn't appreciated by
the birds so a constant harassing of the squirrel took place all day long. Sometimes
the squirrel fled. Well, there is a lot to be seen from a kitchen window.
What about this year, 2011?
A nuthatch couple invaded the lower hole in the birch tree, the very hole where the green woodpecker in 2008 and a squirrel in 2010 had their home. In the upper hole a woodpecker couple again took their residence. The chicks are screeming for food and in a short while they are all gone.
